Google AI Overviews
Also called: AI Overviews, Google AI summaries, SGE
Definition
AI Overviews are summaries written by Google's AI that appear above the regular results for some searches. They grew out of an experiment called SGE, were launched in the United States in May 2024, then expanded to many countries. Google claims more than two billion users a month.
They answer short queries, close to traditional keywords, and rely on Google's index. According to the Semrush AI Visibility Index 2026, YouTube is by far the most cited source there. Blocking Google-Extended doesn't keep you out of them: AI Overviews are part of Google Search and go through Googlebot.
Example
On “how long to keep invoices”, Google first shows a generated paragraph that answers directly, with its sources on the side, before the first blue link.
What it means for your AI visibility
It's the generative engine that reaches the most people, and it sits on the border between SEO and GEO. A page that already ranks well on Google starts with an advantage, but isn't guaranteed to be picked up.
