llms.txt
Also called: llms.txt file
Definition
llms.txt is a text file in markdown format, placed at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It contains the brand name, a summary, then lists of links to the important pages, each with a short description. It was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard, co-founder of Answer.AI.
It's a proposal: no standards body has standardized it, and no major model provider has committed to reading it systematically. It's still simple to set up, carries no risk, and makes you spell out what you want AI to remember. Some sites also publish an llms-full.txt that contains the full text of their documentation.
Example
An llms.txt starts with “# Brand name”, then a one-sentence summary preceded by “>”, then sections like “## Main pages”, with links such as “- [Pricing](https://your-brand.com/pricing): the plans and what they include”.
What it means for your AI visibility
llms.txt won't get you cited on its own. But it gives crawlers a clear way in, and it takes a minute to generate.
