Conversational search
Also called: natural language search, conversational query
Definition
Conversational search is a way of looking for information by asking an AI a real question, the way you would ask a person, then refining it as the exchange goes on. You no longer type “accountant LLC price” but “which online accountant for my LLC, and how much does it cost?”
Questions get longer and more precise. According to the Semrush AI Visibility Index 2026, a question typed into ChatGPT averages 58 characters, against about 25 for the queries that trigger an AI Overview on Google. They often carry the person's context: their job, their budget, their city.
Example
“I'm a personal trainer in Chicago, looking for software to manage my bookings and payments, nothing too expensive” is a typical conversational query. The recommended brand has to match every part of that sentence.
What it means for your AI visibility
To know whether your brand shows up, you have to test it on questions like these, not on keywords. That's the whole point of choosing the prompts you track.
