Prompt tracking
Also called: AI prompt tracking, AI rank tracking, ChatGPT rank tracking
Definition
Prompt tracking is the AI equivalent of rank tracking in SEO. You define a list of questions that represent your market, then a tool puts them to the different engines, every day or every week, and records the brands named, their position and the sources.
Since answers vary from one run to the next, good tracking asks each question several times and on several engines, then works with averages. That's what lets you tell a real trend from a one-off blip.
Example
A brand tracks 50 questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. In six weeks, it sees its presence go from 8 to 17 answers on ChatGPT, but stall on Gemini.
What it means for your AI visibility
Without tracking, you're measuring a snapshot. With regular tracking, you see whether your actions work, on which engine, and you spot a drop right away, like Reddit's in ChatGPT in August 2026.
