Brand mention
Also called: mention in an AI answer, AI brand mention
Definition
A brand mention happens when a generative engine names a brand in the text of its answer. It doesn't necessarily come with a link: the AI can recommend a brand based on sources that aren't its site.
The Semrush AI Visibility Index 2026 stresses the difference between mention and citation: the two are independent. A brand can be mentioned a lot and rarely cited as a source, and the reverse. Mentions come mostly from the brand's awareness and its place in its category.
Example
“For a small business, Qonto and Shine are often recommended”: both brands are mentioned, even if the answer only cites comparisons as sources.
What it means for your AI visibility
The mention is what the person asking remembers. It's the first metric to track, question by question and engine by engine.
