AI visibility
Also called: AI search visibility, visibility in ChatGPT, LLM visibility
Definition
AI visibility is a brand's presence in the answers of generative search engines. It is measured on a set of questions that customers ask, by looking at how often the brand is cited, where it appears, next to which competitors and in what tone.
It's the AI equivalent of your position on Google, with one big difference: an AI answer often contains only two to five brands. According to the Semrush AI Visibility Index 2026, ChatGPT names 3.3 brands per answer on average. Being fourth often means not being there at all.
Example
A brand cited in 12 answers out of 50 questions in its category has a visibility of 24% on that panel. If its main competitor shows up in 30 answers, the gap is obvious at a glance.
What it means for your AI visibility
It's the basic GEO metric. Without it, there's no way to know whether an action worked, or on which engine. And it moves: answers change from one week to the next, which is why regular tracking beats a one-off test.
