Which AI visibility tool for which problem?

An AI visibility tracking tool solves three different problems, and they don't call for the same features. To find out if ChatGPT recommends your brand, you need a tool that asks your real questions every day and keeps the full answers: i am rank, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, SE Visible and HubSpot AEO do this, and the i am rank free scan gives you a first score in two minutes. To track your competitors, look for share of voice and the sources that cite them, engine by engine. To improve your visibility in AI search engines, you need a tool that turns measurement into actions: questions to cover, pages to fix, sources to win over, content to write.

This guide takes the three problems one at a time, with what the tool has to do and the tools that do it, based on their official pages checked on October 29, 2026.

Which tool for which problem

Your problem What the tool has to do Tools that do it

The prices of all these tools are sorted by tier in how much an AI visibility tracking tool costs, and their strengths and limits in our comparison.

1. Find out if ChatGPT recommends your brand

Why a manual test isn't enough

Typing your question into your own ChatGPT gives you one answer, at one moment, shaped by your account. A model never answers the same way twice. We measured it on our own category: to the question “What is the best AI visibility tracking tool for brands in 2026?”, ChatGPT with web search named the same five tools almost every day from October 18 to 28, 2026, but one answer in eleven cited none of them, and two tools showed up only once. A one-off test on that day would have given you the wrong picture.

Two columns: a manual test gives a one-off, biased answer, while a tracking tool asks the same questions every day and archives the answers.
To know whether ChatGPT recommends you without fooling yourself, you have to repeat the question.

What the tool has to do

  • Ask your customers' questions, not just your name: “what's the best…”, “what should I pick for…”, “what's an alternative to…”.
  • Repeat them every day, so you read a trend rather than a one-off draw.
  • Keep the full answer and its sources, to see what your prospect read, and which pages ChatGPT relied on.
  • Separate being named from being cited as a source: ChatGPT can recommend you without linking to your site, or rely on your site without naming you.
  • Cover the other AIs: Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews don't cite the same brands.

Tools that do it

i am rank checks ChatGPT every day, with 9 other engines included, and archives each answer with your brand highlighted. Otterly.AI, Peec AI, SE Visible and HubSpot AEO also track ChatGPT daily; SE Visible says it captures answers from the interface, with a browser. Semrush's toolkit tracks ChatGPT Search, one engine per campaign. For a free first snapshot, the i am rank scan queries five engines in two minutes, and our guide to testing your ChatGPT visibility by hand (in French) walks through the method without a tool, and its limits.

2. Track your competitors in AI answers

What to measure

Knowing you're cited isn't enough: you need to know who you're cited next to, and in what position. Four metrics count:

  • Share of voice: the share of mentions that goes to each brand on your questions. Our article on AI share of voice (in French) gives the formula.
  • Position: being named first or fifth doesn't carry the same weight.
  • The sources that cite your competitors: comparison pages, review sites, forums. That's where the next round is played.
  • The breakdown by engine: a competitor can dominate ChatGPT and be missing from Gemini.

A real example, from our own category: across 454 answers from 10 AI engines to five buying questions, collected from October 18 to 28, 2026, Profound is named in 80% of the answers, Otterly.AI in 76%, Semrush in 73% and Peec AI in 72%. Competitor tracking should give you this table, for your brand.

Tools that do it

i am rank tracks unlimited competitors, detects them from your first scan and calculates your share of voice engine by engine. Peec AI and Otterly.AI also track unlimited competitors, and HubSpot AEO calculates share of voice. Ahrefs Brand Radar has an advantage of its own: its database of more than 512 million prompts shows the visibility of any brand, without you having to choose your questions in advance, but it's only retested once a month.

3. Improve your visibility in AI search engines

Measuring doesn't move you up

A tracking tool tells you where you stand. To make progress, it also has to tell you what to do, in order: the questions where your competitors are cited and you aren't, the sites that cite them, the pages on your site that AI crawlers read badly, the content that's missing. Google says it plainly about its AI features: there's no special optimization to do, SEO best practices still apply, and a page has to be eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be shown as a link (Google documentation, read on October 29, 2026).

Tools, by type of action

Action Tools that offer it
Prioritized recommendations i am rank (action center, recommendations from Pro), AthenaHQ, Otterly.AI
Page audits Otterly.AI (GEO audit), Cockpyt AI (33 points every month), Scrunch, Hikoo
Writing and publishing Profound (agents all the way to a draft in your CMS), Promptwatch, GetMint, i am rank (writing from Pro)
AI crawler tracking on your site i am rank (from Pro), Profound, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Qwairy
What AI agents read Scrunch (a lighter version of the site for them)

Whatever the tool, the levers stay the same: let AI crawlers read your site, answer each of your customers' questions on a page, get cited in your category's sources, and keep the same information everywhere. Our page on AI visibility for brands covers them in detail, with sources, and the GEO checklist (in French) turns them into 15 actions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out if ChatGPT recommends my brand without getting it wrong?

Ask your customers' questions, not your name, from a neutral session, several days in a row, and note who gets cited and with which sources. A single answer tells you nothing: in our tracking, one ChatGPT answer in eleven cited none of the tools it named on the other days. A tracking tool does this work every day, across several AIs.

Which tool tracks my competitors on ChatGPT and Gemini?

A tool that tracks both engines in its base plan and calculates share of voice per engine. i am rank includes ChatGPT and Gemini with 8 other engines from €49 per month excl. VAT; with Peec AI, you can pick them among the 3 engines of the entry plan; with Otterly.AI, Gemini is an add-on.

Is a free tool enough?

For a starting snapshot, yes: the i am rank free scan, HubSpot's AEO Grader or Qwairy's free plan. To follow a trend, your competitors and the effect of your actions, you need daily tracking, so a paid tool or a lot of time.
