AI traffic
Also called: AI referral traffic, LLM traffic, traffic from AI
Definition
AI traffic means the visits that reach a site from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Claude, when the user clicks a link in the answer. In Google Analytics, it shows up as referring sites like chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, and ChatGPT often adds the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter to its links.
This traffic is still smaller than Google's for most sites, but it's often more qualified: the person has already read a recommendation before clicking. Part of AI's influence stays invisible, because many users don't click and search for the brand directly afterwards.
Example
By creating an “AI” channel group in Google Analytics, a site can compare these visits with the rest: landing pages, time on site, conversions. That's often where you find out which pages AI actually recommends.
What it means for your AI visibility
AI traffic is the measurable part of your AI visibility. It doesn't tell the whole story, but it shows which pages assistants send people to, and what those visitors do next.
